Why do I have to configure my software?

Internet software looks like one program, but it is really several different programs working together. The main programs you use include:

• A dialing program. (Dial-Up Networking that comes with Windows 95 or Winsock for Windows 3.x, for example.)
• A browser program. This allows you to view WebPages on the Internet. Netscape Navigator (or Netscape Communicator), and Internet Explorer are the most popular browsers.
• A mail program. This gives you the ability to send and receive e-mail. Among the most popular programs are Netscape Mail, Internet Mail, Outlook Express, Outlook 97, and Eudora.

You must configure your dialer to connect to the Internet, then load a browser of your choice, then tell your e-mail software where your mailbox address is on the Internet.
